The white wines from both wineries are processed at Battenfeld-Spanier’s headquarters in Hohen-Sülzen, while the red wines are processed at Kühling-Gillot in Bodenheim. Although Kühling-Gillot’s wines bear the same signature as those of Battenfeld-Spanier, they are stylistically very distinct due to the vastly different soil structures. All wines adhere to H.O. Spanier’s purist philosophy that the vineyard site and grape variety should find their way into the bottle as directly and unadulterated as possible. To this end, H.O. relies on biodynamic viticulture, perfect grape quality, spontaneous fermentation, and aging in large, used wooden barrels. This approach lends even Kühling-Gillot’s “smaller” wines a great deal of finesse and complexity; the 2014 Qvinterra earned second place among estate Rieslings in Gault Millau. We are particularly impressed by the magnificent local Riesling Nierstein, which, after a few years of bottle aging, outshines many a “Großes Gewächs.” However, the “Großes Gewächs” wines from Carolin and HO—from steep slopes such as Ölberg, Pettenthal, and Rothenberg—take it to the next level in terms of minerality, power, and longevity.
