Emrich-Schönleber

In Monzingen, at the very western end of the Nahe Valley, Werner Schönleber and his son Frank produce absolutely world-class Rieslings from the legendary Frühlingsplätzchen and Halenberg vineyards, wines that perfectly combine minerality, depth, and delicacy. After all, the family’s philosophy is: “Good wines aren’t enough for us; our single-vineyard Rieslings must have a distinctive character, be honest and authentic, and be a joy to drink.” The estate, with 20 hectares of vineyards (75% of which are in “Große Lagen” or premier sites), has been in superb form for many years, but Frank has managed to bring the wines even closer to perfection in recent years.

The wine world is enthusiastic; top ratings for Stephan Reinhardt in Parker’s Wine Advocate, as well as effusive praise in *Feinschmecker* and *Gault Millau*, are the order of the day. The vineyards are naturally located in a cool wine-growing climate, with the best conditions found in sites featuring optimal slope orientation, stony soils, and a warm microclimate. The premier sites Halenberg and Frühlingsplätzchen perfectly meet these requirements, with a south to southwest exposure, slopes of up to 70%, and an average of 1,900 hours of sunshine per year. In addition, strong thermal effects occur as warm air currents rise from the valley and further heat the soil. At night, however, the nearby Soonwald forest provides a welcome natural cooling effect. The soils consist of what are known as “Waderner layers,” which are heavily composed of slate and quartzite. Here, the grapes consistently produce smaller berries and are more aromatic than usual. A word about the Monzinger Auf der Ley: a prime plot in the upper part of the Halenberg, reclaimed by the Schönleber family, which is characterized by its purist coolness and was already classified as “first quality” in the Prussian tax map of 1901. However, due to the difficulty of cultivating it, the plot lay fallow for decades. Today, the “Mineral” benefits enormously from the grapes grown there, even though the vines were not planted until 2008. A bright future lies ahead.
