In recent years, Philipp Kuhn has emerged as one of the leading winemakers in the Northern Palatinate and is now rightly mentioned in the same breath as winemaking greats such as his neighbor Knipser. Thanks to estates like this, the region around Laumersheim—home to the Kuhn Winery—has become a beacon of quality in the Palatinate. Philipp’s wines, with their charming fullness and delicate smoothness, are exceptionally inviting examples of a wide variety of grape varieties. Philipp Kuhn’s wine selection consists of equal parts red and white wine. Pinot Noir dominates the reds, but Philipp also cultivates many other, sometimes unusual grape varieties such as Portugieser, Lemberger, St. Laurent, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The red wines are aged almost exclusively in wooden barrels—the basic wines in used and larger barrels, while the top wines are aged in new barriques for up to 24 months. Among the white wines, Riesling has now risen to the top of the hierarchy at the Kuhn winery. Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Traminer, Muscat, and Sauvignon Blanc round out Philipp Kuhn’s diverse wine selection. In the case of the top wines, the rich, extract-driven body typical of Kuhn is complemented by greater complexity and a slightly sharper edge, making it advisable to allow these wines to age in the bottle for a few years.Großkarlbacher Str. 20
