Didier Grappe’s winery is located south of Poligny in the small village of Saint-Lothain, and his most important vineyards—Novelin, Champs Rouge, and Longefin—are situated right around the village. Like the region’s other top winemakers, Grappe practices organic viticulture in the vineyard and uses no additives other than the grapes themselves in the cellar. Didier produces taut, expressive, and largely reductive wines, with plenty of drive, fine tannins, and a compact texture. While the philosophy is actually very similar, the approach in this region of individualists is entirely different.

Didier took over his parents’ winery in 2001, along with several plots of old vines, particularly in the Novelin and Champs Rouge vineyards. However, the majority of his vineyards are relatively new plantings; Didier has always been eager to experiment, making him a pioneer and visionary. He planted the Longefin vineyard, a former cow pasture facing northeast that has yielded excellent results during the increasingly frequent hot summers of recent years. For several years now, he has also been planting many fungus-resistant grape varieties in his vineyards, as these varieties are less susceptible to frost damage and downy mildew. Since the vineyards here require almost no spraying, this conserves resources and reduces soil compaction. Didier says these varieties are made for sulfur-free cultivation and winemaking and are therefore perfectly suited for natural wine.
