Marie Thibault

Marie Thibault

Marie Thibault is a radiant presence with an infectious smile that always seems slightly mischievous, making her even more likable. Radiant and mischievous actually describe Marie’s wines quite well, too, as they combine a crisp and robust minerality, a subtle wildness, and great depth—if you give them enough time and air. After studying biology and oenology in Montpellier and spending a year in South Africa, Marie Thibault began working at François Chidaine’s winery in Vouvray, where she came to know and love Chenin Blanc. In 2004, she began cultivating a small plot of old Chenin vines, and her first wine—the “Premier Nez”—was born.

After a few years, she purchased a small plot of land in the middle of nowhere in Azay-le-Rideau, far from the rest of the AOC. The soils here consist mainly of white clay and limestone, as well as flint, and since 2014, all the vineyards have been farmed organically. Fermentation takes place with natural yeasts, exclusively in used wooden barrels, and little to no sulfur is added. Marie’s wines are robust and taut, with little fruit but plenty of spice, characterized by great depth, concentration, and minerality.
