Andi Weigand

Andi Weigand

As the enfant terrible of his hometown, Andi Weigand brings a breath of fresh air to the Franconian idyll of Iphofen. He feels quite comfortable in his role as the village rebel, because with his approach, his manner, and his style of winemaking, he wants to distance himself as far as possible from the established winemakers. Nevertheless, Andi is a perfectionist and works with great precision in the vineyard to ensure that only perfect grapes make it into the cellar, where he does as little as possible apart from pressing. The result is natural wines with great sensitivity, balance, and tranquility that wonderfully convey the Iphofen terroir and, with their compact structure, firm minerality, and animating finesse, represent a huge enrichment for the Franconian wine world.

Andi makes no compromises, either in the vineyard or in the cellar. The vineyards, which are mainly planted with very old vines, are cultivated biodynamically and tended with great dedication and manual labor. In addition to the main varieties Silvaner and Müller-Thurgau, various Burgundy varieties as well as some Scheurebe and Riesling are cultivated. All grapes are harvested by hand and pressed immediately. The wines do not need to be aged, as the heavy Keuper soil provides sufficient structure and density. The must is fermented spontaneously and mostly matured in large, used wooden barrels from local forests. After ten months on the lees, the wines are racked once and bottled without further manipulation—all of which makes the wines pure, austere, and precise, yet still wonderfully accessible and balanced.
