When you sit with Matthias Warnung in front of his cellar in the rustic Kellergasse and taste his (natural) wines, his philosophy on winemaking becomes particularly clear. He cultivates several promising vineyards belonging to his parents' winery in Etsdorf am Kamp (not far from Grafenegg Castle Grafenegg), where the grapes are grown with minimal intervention and then matured in traditional wooden barrels in the old cellar for over two years with great confidence in their basic substance to produce distinctive, expressive wines. Rarely have we been so enthusiastic and convinced about a young winemaker right from the start, without the usual observation phase. We were particularly impressed by the loose, small-berried Veltliner vines behind his old vaulted cellar.

As the scion of a winegrowing family, Matthias Warnung graduated from the viticulture school in Klosterneuburg and trained with Markus Huber in the Traisental valley. Through Huber's connections, the young man first came to South Africa to work with Craig Hawkins (Testalonga in Swartland), where he experienced the transition to organic viticulture. From there, he was “passed on” to Tom Lubbe, a native South African, at Matassa in Roussillon. These encounters gave Matthias access to winemaking, which he really enjoyed: “getting the most out of old, little-exploited vineyards and bringing them through the cellar with minimal intervention.” With these formative experiences, he started his own ESPERÉ project in 2011, back in the Kamptal, with the family's first small vineyard. The exciting local wine line (Etsdorf) includes an extremely juicy Grüner Veltliner, a Zweigelt full of structure, a skillful Müller-Thurgau, and a very mature Chardonnay.Kampgasse 9
