His vineyards are home to the full range of Rheinhessen’s grape varieties, and he crafts lively and expressive wines even from varieties such as Faber, Würzer, Bacchus, and Müller-Thurgau. Marto’s vineyards are organically farmed; Martin places great emphasis on perfect grapes and an early harvest to preserve freshness and lightness, which is why his wines always have a low alcohol content of around 11% ABV. All wines undergo maceration; they are spontaneously fermented in used wooden barrels and remain on the lees for over a year before being bottled unfiltered and, in most cases, unsulphured.
Even the entry-level wine Marto Weiss is a wonderful example of balanced and complex natural wines: alongside a touch of wildness, delicate fruit, plenty of freshness, and an easy-drinking character come together. In addition, there are two single-varietal wines—Riesling and Pinot Gris—as well as a Burgundy cuvée blending Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, and Pinot Noir. Frauenpower is a project by his girlfriend, Alanna La Gamba, who wanted to create a sort of German Lambrusco from Dornfelder and Silvaner. This sparkling wine, however, is bone-dry, with low alcohol, crisp acidity, and intense fruit. It’s best enjoyed with grilled meat.
