Elisabeth Pichler and Erich Krutzler produce wines of the highest quality with a strong sense of origin on a small area of land. Both Riesling and Grüner Veltliner are characterized by fine aromas, noble minerality, and a delicate creaminess. To achieve this style, the Pichler-Krutzler winery uses only botrytis-free grapes, as Erich does not like raisin flavors. The wines should clearly and puristically reflect their respective locations and are therefore processed and bottled separately. As the winery is not a member of Vinea Wachau, the wines may not be labeled as Federspiel or Smaragd. However, some of the top wines come from the same vineyards as the great Smaragds, and the entry-level wines can easily compete with the most famous Federspiele – and are even a little cheaper! You should definitely try the homemade, natural apricot jam from Pichler-Krutzler, which we and many of our customers consider to be the absolute best!

It was not until 2007 that Elisabeth Pichler, daughter of Wachau grand seigneur FX Pichler, and Erich Krutzler, brother of Blaufränkisch specialist Reinhold Krutzler from Burgenland, started their own winery in the Wachau after years of wandering. The vineyards are cultivated in a natural way to keep the vines and nature as vital as possible, and in the near future, the winery plans to switch entirely to organic cultivation. Cover cropping in the vineyards and very laborious foliage work are the means used to produce grapes completely free of botrytis. Pichler-Krutzler also takes a purist approach in the cellar, using natural production methods to ensure that the wines are as unadulterated as possible when they are bottled. Measures such as chaptalization, fining, concentration, or the use of pure yeasts are completely avoided. Fermentation takes place exclusively spontaneously and, depending on the location, the wine is aged in steel tanks or in old large wooden barrels. The winery's best sites are Loibenberg, Pfaffenberg, and Kellerberg (Wunderburg). In addition to its great white wines, the winery also offers a rare find in the Wachau region: a robust Blaufränkisch called Weinberg, with an intense structure and lots of minerality, from Erich's homeland in southern Burgenland.Oberloiben 16
