Ott

The Ott family has known the terroir of Wagram for several generations. A loess wall up to 20 meters high stretches north of the Danube from Krems to Stockerau. They know from experience that Grüner Veltliner thrives there and produces excellent wines. Accordingly, 90% of the winery's vineyards are planted with this variety. There is also some Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, and, more recently, a Gemischter Satz. The vineyards, which are almost exclusively south-facing with plenty of sunshine, warm Pannonian climatic influences from the Hungarian Plain, and nighttime cooling from the nearby Waldviertel region, give the grapes their distinctive aroma. Bernhard Ott, alias ‘Mr. Veltliner’, uses them to make extremely charming Grüner Veltliners with exceptional drinkability. The Grüner Veltliner ‘Fass 4’ is already famous.

“The limits of technology meant that conventional viticulture could no longer improve quality,” the winemaker realized, and in 2006 he converted the estate to biodynamic cultivation in accordance with the Respect guidelines. Since then, Bernhard Ott has been taking his wines to the highest possible heights, not only in terms of taste but also in terms of ecology. His fascination with traditional winemaking also inspired him to create the macerated amphora wine ‘Qvevre’. The Veltliner range is clearly structured into four levels: Am Berg, “Fass 4,” “Der Ott,” and the single-vineyard wines Feuersbrunner Rosenberg, Spiegel, and Engabrunner Stein. Bernhard Ott was named Winemaker of the Year by Falstaff in 2008.
