Founded in 1898, the Tramin Winery Cooperative is located in the heart of South Tyrol, in the wine-growing village of the same name, from which the famous Gewürztraminer grape variety takes its name. Warm days and cold downdrafts from the surrounding mountains at night shape the wines, which are full-bodied, fruit-forward, yet fresh and smooth on the palate. The Gewürztraminers are, of course, particularly noteworthy; the Nussbaumer is considered one of the finest examples of its variety and among the best white wines in Italy.

With 300 member wineries, the Tramin Winery is one of Italy’s largest wine producers, yet it remains committed to quality: the new winery uses gravity to process the grapes as gently as possible, and since 2007, the wineries have been gradually transitioning to sustainable agriculture. Today, herbicides are largely avoided, and an ever-increasing number of acres are cultivated according to organic and biodynamic principles. A key figure in this viticultural structure—alongside the many small producers who invest a great deal of time and passion into their vineyards, which they have often inherited—is the winemaker. Willi Stürz has led the winery since 1992 with a tireless commitment to quality, practicing modern, nature-oriented agriculture while honoring tradition. His credo: “ There is no room for improvisation: both in the vineyard and in the cellar, the highest degree of precision is required so that every bottle can develop the aromas that are characteristic of its variety and style.” The results prove him right; over the years, the Tramin Winery has received numerous awards, including the prestigious “3 Glasses” rating 20 times in the Gambero Rosso wine guide.Weinstr. 144
