Young Matthias Knebel is bringing a breath of fresh air to the Terrassenmosel region. On the steep, barren slate soils around Winningen, he produces mineral-driven wines with finesse and structure. So far, nothing new. But Knebel’s wines are also charming and easy to drink—not because of clunky residual sweetness, as is so often the case on the Mosel, but thanks to perfectly ripened grapes, extended maceration, spontaneous fermentation, and long aging on the lees. The subtle phenolic structure also gives the wines grip and depth.
