Frederic Cossard is a character, a pioneer, a very sociable chap and the story of how he built up his domaine is just as extraordinary as his wines. From the very beginning, the aim was to produce natural wines that are made without new Barriques and reflect the soil sparse and direct way. In Saint Romain he produces purist wines with a lot of energy, even in warm years the acidity is lively and the structure is always quite demanding, but you can feel the unadorned terroir of Burgundy in a way that is hard to find elsewhere. For us, this is a legendary winery with great and expressive wines!
The path to wine was not directly mapped out, as Fred does not come from a wine-growing family and was supposed to follow in his father's footsteps as a milk and cheese producer. However, already back then he was much more interested in wine and started working as a grape broker. This is a normal job in Burgundy, where the contact between the grape producer and the negociant is established. In this role, he had to taste a lot of wines from all over the region and as he didn't like most of the wines, he founded Domaine de Chassorney together with his wife Laure in 1996.
