Frank John

Frank John

“Great wines of the old school!” is Frank John’s motto. The charismatic winemaker worked for many years as a consultant for wineries throughout Europe before acquiring the Hirschhorner Hof in the Palatinate in 2002. His area of expertise and passion are biodynamic viticulture and working with traditional winemaking methods. The lineup is very streamlined, consisting of just one Riesling, one Riesling sparkling wine, and one Pinot Noir. The wines combine elegance, structure, and balance, perfectly reflecting winemaker Frank John. It’s therefore no surprise that the Eichelmann Wine Guide gives Frank John a top rating of 4 out of 5 stars.

The Riesling Buntsandstein undergoes spontaneous fermentation in neutral wooden barrels, remains on the fine lees for an extended period, and is bottled after a single filtration without any treatment with enzymes or fining agents. This process produces elegant and complex Rieslings that impress with their finesse and taut structure. The base wine for the Riesling sparkling wine is aged in Palatinate oak barrels after whole-cluster pressing, before being traditionally fermented into sparkling wine and left on the lees for 38 months. The Pinot Noir comes from particularly chalky vineyards and is aged for two years in used barriques before being bottled without filtration.
