Franz Weninger

Franz Weninger

Franz Weninger never stands still. He is constantly looking for ways to further improve his wines and refine his own style. His father, Franz Weninger Sr., was one of Austria's red wine magnates, famous for his Blaufränkisch Dürrau. But the junior has an even better feel for the soil in his vineyards and a distinct talent for expressing it in his wines in a purist and authentic way. Blaufränkisch, the flagship variety at the Weninger winery, is of course perfectly suited for this. The Blaufränkisch wines from Franz Jr. are delicate, juicy, complex, and structured. They are the benchmark in Austria in every price range, and the Kalkofen is one of the best wines in the country. Of course, these wines benefit from a few years of bottle aging. However, they are also surprisingly accessible in their youth and give a lot of pleasure. In addition to a few other firm red wines, the diverse range also includes white wines with a slight natural touch and a delicate Pinot Noir, which particularly impressed us in the 2015 vintage with its chalky minerality and rare drinkability.
Franz Weninger Jr. is undoubtedly one of the most talented winemakers in Burgenland.

Blaufränkisch is not only the most important variety at Weninger, it is also their favorite. This is because it is best suited to reflecting the different facets of the soil in the wine. The Weningers now have an impressive variety of different Blaufränkisch wines from loam and limestone soils in Horitschon, mica schist in Neckenmarkt and Balf, and blue schist on the Eisenberg in southern Burgenland. The vineyards are cultivated biodynamically, fermentation is spontaneous, and the wine is given the time it needs to develop in the winery. Maceration time for red wines has now been drastically reduced. It usually lasts only 7 to 10 days, and the grapes are gently punched down by hand to bring even more finesse and elegance to the wines. In addition, care is taken to give the wines only as much wood as necessary, which is why the wines are now almost exclusively aged in used barrels of 500 liters or more.
