Julian Haart

Julian Haart

Julian Haart from Piesport on the Moselle is both a rising star and an insider tip. He has been celebrated for years among wine enthusiasts for his style, but he flies somewhat under the radar in most classic guides and magazines. Yet his wine style is a minor revolution on the Moselle and deserves much more attention. With his austere and delicate Rieslings, he shows what is possible in terms of elegance and complexity in the Middle Mosel region. His wines are always extremely well balanced, with fresh acidity and a sparse mineral structure, resembling the classic Mosel wines that are unfortunately rarely produced anymore.

The tiny winery is located in Piesport and was founded by Julian and his wife Nadine in 2010. Before that, Julian learned from the best: at Emrich-Schönleber on the Nahe, Heymann-Löwenstein on the Mosel, Egon Müller on the Saar, and from his mentor Klaus-Peter Keller in Rheinhessen. It is impressive that, despite his great teachers, he has gone his own way and is now considered a stylistic pioneer on the Moselle. On the one hand, he works traditionally, purely by hand and with tiny yields, but on the other hand, he also uses modern methods and sometimes ferments individual batches on the mash.

His vines in Piesport grow on barren Devonian slate, and the top sites with the oldest vines are called Ohligsberg and Goldtröpfchen. However, during his time in Rheinhessen, Julian also developed a great love for wines from limestone. That's why he couldn't say no when the opportunity arose a few years ago to acquire a parcel in the top Frauenberg vineyard.
