Château Cambon

Château Cambon

Château Cambon was founded in the mid-1990s as a joint venture between the legendary Beaujolais winemakers Marcel Lapierre and Jean-Claude “le Chat” Chanudet. They simply had to seize the opportunity when the run-down Domaine Cambon was offered to them, complete with its magnificent vineyards featuring vines up to a century old growing on granite and limestone soil. It was precisely the age of the plots and the terroir of the domaine, located in Belleville-en-Beaujolais, that captivated the two winemakers from Villié-Morgon. Cambon’s wines are more austere and delicate than their counterparts from Lapierre and Chamonard. The focus is on juiciness and a delicate freshness; the tannins are silky and soft, with only the Brouilly showing a bit more power and bringing a touch of dark spice.

The great Marcel Lapierre sadly passed away far too soon in 2010; since then, the winery has been run by his wife, Marie Lapierre, together with the Chanudet family. At Château Cambon, the winemaking practices naturally adhere to the principles that these two legends themselves developed: biodynamic farming in harmony with nature and minimal intervention in the cellar, avoiding sulfur whenever possible. The entire harvest is done by hand, and the grapes undergo spontaneous fermentation using the classic carbonic maceration method. The wine is then aged for 9 months in 200-year-old barrels in the château’s cellar; only the Brouilly, which has been produced since 2016, is aged in small, used wooden barrels.
