Since its acquisition by the prudent Ewald Tscheppe 20 years ago, the Werlitsch Winery has been one of the pioneers of the Austrian biodynamic and natural wine scene. It can confidently be described as a bank and one of our personal favorite wineries: the energetic, characterful wines from Styria are reliably among the highlights on any wine list. It is no coincidence that Werlitsch has long since achieved great fame and is highly regarded by wine lovers around the world.

Ewald has been one of the pioneers of organic viticulture in Styria since he took over his parents' business 20 years ago and immediately converted to biodynamic farming. In the vineyards around the Werlitschhof near the Slovenian border, the vines grow on the typical Opok soil, a calcareous clay marl, mostly planted in the rare inverted training system. Werlitsch wines are bursting with energy, expressive and intense, with plenty of reduction that can sometimes be a little harsh, challenging the palate with fresh acidity and fine tannins. Because of this rare, unbridled liveliness, Ewald Tscheppe's wines have long been famous and in demand all over the world. Ewald Tscheppe lives biodynamics with all his heart without dogmatically following one direction. He thinks carefully about every step of the process and is open to innovation—as long as it doesn't involve chemical additives. The wines are fermented spontaneously and aged on the lees for at least two years without sulfur before being bottled as puristically as possible.
The three Ex Vero wines are the winery's flagship products and exemplify Werlitsch's special focus on microclimatic conditions. They all come from the same vineyard, which is located directly behind the farm. Ex Vero III comes from the highest and steepest part, where it is coolest and the soil is most barren. The middle part of the vineyard produces Ex Vero II, while the lower, warmest part with the heaviest soil is used for Ex Vero I. In Ewald's eyes, it is not the variety but the location that is the decisive factor – accordingly, all three wines are cuvées of Morillon and Sauvignon Blanc, with the proportions varying depending on the vintage.
In addition, since 2010, Ewald has been actively involved in the community of values “Schmecke das Leben” (Taste Life) with four like-minded Styrian biodynamic pioneers (Sepp Muster, his brother Andreas Tscheppe, Franz Strohmeier, and Roland Tauss) to actively share experiences of holistic natural farming. (Sepp Muster, his brother Andreas Tscheppe, Franz Strohmeier, and Roland Tauss) to gather experiences of a holistic understanding of nature, overcome setbacks and hostility, and achieve the best possible results.
