Lichtenberger & Gonzalez

The vivacious Adriana Gonzalez from Galicia and her reserved husband Martin Lichtenberger are an incredibly likeable winemaking couple and, in our opinion, still an underrated top winery from Leithaberg. In the beginning, the Lichtenberger & Gonzalez winery was run as a sideline, as the couple were working as cellar masters. Over the last few years, however, so many great vineyards have been added that the now total of 10 hectares of vineyards keep the whole family busy. The two trained winemakers can look back on many years of experience in viticulture and have managed to carefully develop their style and further consolidate their signature over the last few years. The vineyards are organically farmed with the aim of producing authentic, natural wines with depth, calm, and finesse.

On the northwestern side of Lake Neusiedl, in the Leitha Mountains, the vineyards of Lichtenberger & Gonzalez lie on limestone and slate soil. The most important ingredient, besides perfect grapes, is time. The wines are given as much time as they need to ferment spontaneously and then mature, with minimal intervention, first on the lees in used wooden barrels and later in the bottle. The result is natural, profound, and mineral wines, supported by juicy acidity and a grippy structure. Most of the vineyards are planted with Blaufränkisch, the main variety at the winery and also Martin's great passion, which is now vinified in a wide variety of styles. As rosé, sparkling wine, and, of course, red wines, from the basic to the two top sites, Vorderberg and Edelgraben. Adriana brings her homeland to Austria, so to speak, and has created the sensational Tres Cuartos, a Welschriesling vinified with flor yeast that is unparalleled. In addition, the two Veltliners and Pinot Blancs offer Burgundian finesse and grandeur. A magnificent wine series in which all wines exude calm and charm, just like the people who create the wine with their heart and Soul.
