Jonas Dostert

Jonas Dostert

Jonas Dostert is a friendly, disarmingly open winemaker who has only been producing his own wines for a few years. The impression made by two vintages was enough for us to travel to the Upper Moselle for the first time and visit Jonas in his hometown of Nittel. Just a stone's throw from the Saar, yet the soil, climate, and variety of grapes are completely different from the rest of the Mosel. The dominant variety is the relatively unknown Elbling, which is usually grown here with very high yields for cheap sparkling wine production. Jonas takes a completely different approach and has won us over completely with his style and his wines.

The region's barren limestone soil harbors enormous potential and offers ideal conditions for white and red Burgundy varieties. Jonas also produces terroir-driven, taut, and lively wines from Elbling grapes, with finesse and a compact mineral core. This is the style of the winery, which is impressively reflected throughout the entire range. A great addition to our range and another facet of the exciting Moselle region.

Jonas took over part of his father's vineyards, which were mainly planted with Elbling and some Pinot Gris. Since 2015, he has been partially replanting his vineyards, focusing entirely on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The vineyards are organically farmed, which he describes as artisanal work with mindfulness and humility towards nature. Accordingly, as little intervention as possible takes place in the cellar. After whole-cluster pressing, the wines are spontaneously fermented in used Burgundy wooden barrels, followed by long aging on the lees and bottling without filtration, of course.
