La Porte Saint Jean

La Porte Saint Jean

Sylvain Dittière is the most exciting young winemaker in the Loire! With no family background in winemaking but having worked with some of the region’s best winemakers—such as Du Collier, Gérard Gauby, and Thierry Germain—he founded his own winery, La Porte Saint Jean, in Montreuil-Bellay in 2010. On about 9 hectares, he cultivates Cabernet Franc and Chenin Blanc—organically, with the utmost precision and a clear focus on expressing the terroir.

His wines always contain a proportion of new oak, which allows them to combine depth, elegance, and remarkable freshness with a firm structure and a gripping minerality. They are calm and focused wines, characterized by understatement and remarkable energy. Among Loire connoisseurs, the wines of La Porte Saint Jean have been one of the region’s hottest insider tips for several years now. It has since outgrown that stage and has not only caught up with Domaine du Collier and Clos Rougeard in terms of quality, but also in terms of limited availability.

After several years of courting the producer, we have now received our first allocation. To start things off, we have the Cabernet Franc from the Les Pouches vineyard, characterized by limestone under sandy loam. The vineyard consists of two parcels: one half with 25-year-old vines and the other with 70-year-old vines, aged for two years in barriques with a small proportion of new barrels.
