Salzl Seewinkelhof

Salzl Seewinkelhof

The newly built Salzl family winery is round and harmonious, with virtually no rough edges. This applies not only to the architecture, but also, in particular, to the characteristics of the wines. All wines at the Salzl winery, including those aged in barriques, are accessible and smooth, with a rich roasted aroma from the wood, relatively low tannins, and low acidity. The sandy and gravelly soils and the extremely warm microclimate in the so-called Seewinkel region of Burgenland around Illmitz create a very special terroir, which is reflected in the high ripeness of the velvety-soft wines.

Today, three generations work at the winery with the goal of achieving maximum quality. The winery looks back on a long tradition. Winegrowing has been practiced here since 1840. Grandfather Heribert was known for his sweet wines, which he sold in large containers before his son Josef switched to bottling in 1985. Since 2005, the third generation, represented by Christoph Salzl, has been successfully involved in the business.

Red wine occupies most of the vineyard area, with Zweigelt naturally being the most important grape variety. In addition to the second important local grape variety, Blaufränkisch, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah provide international flair. For white wine, the focus is on Chardonnay, which ripens to exceptional quality in this region. Salzl wines have won several awards, with a major success being first place in the highly competitive red cuvée category with the 2011 Cuvée 3-5-8 at the AWC Vienna 2013. In addition, the Zweigelt Reserve was also among the top three in its category.
