Bertram-Baltes

Julia Bertram and Benedikt Baltes – a success story and love story from the Ahr region. After studying oenology in Geisenheim and spending a year as German wine queen, young Julia Bertram began pressing her first wine in 2013. Gault Millau was also quickly impressed by the fine Pinot Noirs and named her Discovery of the Year with her third vintage. Benedikt Baltes, the son of a winemaker from Mayschoss on the Ahr, initially moved to Franconia, where he revived the Stadt Klingenberg winery and made a name for himself as a talented Pinot winemaker within a few years. After the couple married in 2018, Benedikt gave up the winery in Klingenberg and returned to his homeland to make great Ahr wines together with Julia.

The young couple now manages all of the Bertram family's vineyards, putting their heart and soul into growing Pinot Noir on slate and greywacke soils. The range is clearly divided into estate wines, which are called “Handwerk” , local wines, and a whole range of great single vineyard wines. The couple is committed to sustainability and believes in organic farming, circular economy, and permaculture—by combining natural elements such as plants, animals, and stones, conditions are created that allow nature to regulate itself and constantly renew itself. For example, keeping sheep in the vineyards to control weeds has become an integral part of the work. In order to preserve the authenticity and character of the wines, they are given time and space to rest in the cellar, consciously avoiding enrichment (historically common on the Ahr), pure yeasts, fining, and filtration. As in the past, the wines are aged naturally and spontaneously in large oak barrels (no barriques) made from local oak. The wines are gently fermented with up to four weeks of maceration and manual punching down, aged in a rather reductive manner with plenty of yeast lees, and bottled with minimal sulfur addition. The result is elegant and delicate Pinot Noirs, light in color and rich in finesse, not too high in alcohol and with a fresh acidity, they do, however, need a little more time and air than others.
