Heinz Velich runs a small winery in Apetlon in the heart of the Seewinkel nature reserve. His consistent focus on dry white wines, which is unusual in the region, quickly bore fruit: Darscho and Tiglat are among the best Chardonnays in Austria and are known far beyond the country's borders. With their elegance, power, and salty minerality, they are reminiscent of great wines from Burgundy and have even been awarded 5+ stars by Stuart Pigott. But even at the other end of the price scale, the Velich winery surprises with a simple, atypical Welschriesling, which is mellow in structure and salty and mineral, offering excellent value for money! In between, the intense, charming, yet profound Cuvée TO rounds off the small but extremely fine range.

The Seewinkel region is actually quite flat, with over 40 small lakes that are highly saline due to a lack of natural drainage. This creates a special microclimate that has proven to be particularly conducive to viticulture. Most of his fellow winegrowers in Austria's sunniest region tend to produce intensely rounded wines, but not Heinz Velich, who vinifies Welschriesling and Muskat Ottonel in steel tanks to produce light, fruity wines that nevertheless have mineral depth and an unusual structure. The two Chardonnays, the Cuvée TO and the Prädikat wines, which are vinified irregularly depending on the vintage, are fermented and aged in used barriques to become more full-bodied, but benefit similarly from the salty soil.
