Bernhard Huber

The Bernhard Huber winery in Baden is regarded as the German Burgundy authority par excellence and has long been known beyond the country's borders for its complex, long-lasting Pinot Noirs. In recent years, the wines have become even more elegant and thus even closer to the French model. Under the leadership of son Julian, who first worked on the Chardonnays, but has now also made his style clearly recognisable in the Pinot Noirs, the dominance of the estate has become even clearer. Julian first caused a sensation and empty shelves with his purist, taut and very reductive 2014 Chardonnays.

The full-bodied 2015 vintage continued this trend. The difficult and extremely tight 2016 vintage was also excellent, fine and elegant with vibrant acidity. Julian has replaced his Pinot Blanc with the white Malterdinger cuvée blended with young Chardonnay vines. The insider tip remains the Pinot Gris, which allows you to get a taste of Julian Huber's reductive range for comparatively little money and is also more drinkable than the sophisticated Chardonnays and the very crisp Malterdinger.

65 per cent of the vineyards at the Huber estate are planted with Pinot Noir. The rest of the vineyards are largely dominated by the white Burgundy varieties Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris, with a small proportion also planted with Auxerrois. Bernhard Huber's range now includes seven Pinot Noirs, from light and delicate entry-level wines to the highest-rated single-vineyard Spätburgunder Wildenstein. The Huber winery is one of the leading wineries in Baden and, as a training centre, also provides further training for the next generation of winegrowers in Baden.
