Joiseph

The Joiseph Winery was founded in 2015 by Richard Artner, Xandl Kagl, and Luka Zeichmann as a small project, without a cellar, tractor, or any other infrastructure. They had three pairs of vine shears, rubber boots, and the idea of creating a different kind of winery with the goal of producing authentic, down-to-earth wines in harmony with nature. The motto of the three is: “Give back more than you take,” and it applies equally to nature and to the people involved with the winery.

Luka Zeichmann is the head of the winery, a true nature lover and full-time cellar master at Franz Weninger. There we had the opportunity to meet the affectionate and down-to-earth winemaker during the 2018 harvest. He is a tinkerer, a gardener, a winemaker, and also a craftsman. He loves to spend the whole day in nature and talks with shining eyes about the vegetable patch, the insects, or the humus layer of the soil. You can sense his deep connection to nature and his gratitude for being able to work with it.

He now has almost 6 hectares of vineyards on limestone and slate soil on the Leithaberg around Jois, which are cultivated biodynamically by hand. Fermentation is spontaneous and there is no manipulation in the cellar, which means that the wines sometimes have rough edges, but also character and Depth.
