Nusserhof

At the historic Nusserhof, run by Heinrich and Elda Mayr in Bolzano, time seems to stand still—in a positive sense, because they’ve been farming organically here since 1994, striving for extremely low yields, using spontaneous fermentation, aging the wine for long periods in large wooden barrels, and storing it in the bottle for up to two years. The Mayrs have not let the city growing around them disturb their peace of mind; they continue to cultivate their traditional craft, even though the winery is now surrounded by a bustling industrial area. Entirely handcrafted, their wines are delicate, timeless, and of great finesse. )

The Nusserhof is a green oasis, a gem on the banks of the Eisack River, but one that is now, unfortunately, located in a gray, noisy industrial zone on the northern outskirts of Bolzano, ruined by real estate speculators. The Mayr family fought a 30-year battle to preserve this gem until the mid-1980s, when a political decision was finally made to preserve the Nusserhof in memory of the honorable and combative Josef Mayr-Nusser.

On a modest 4 hectares, the indigenous varieties Blatterle (an almost extinct relative of the Yellow Muscat), Lagrein, Vernatsch, and Tyroldego are cultivated. The deep soils, composed of porphyry and dolomite-rich sediments from the Eisack River, provide an ideal growing environment for these varieties. The warmth of the Bolzano Basin and the good ventilation provided by the Eisack Valley offer ideal conditions for viticulture and fruit growing. Part of the vineyard lies directly adjacent to the farm on typical alluvial soils, while the other part is located in the nearby St. Magdalena area on volcanic porphyry rock.
