Alessandro Salvano grew up in a family of winemakers, spending his childhood in and around his grandparents’ vineyards in Montelupo Albese. The vineyards are located just a few meters—600, to be exact—outside the boundaries of Barolo and are virtually identical to those of neighboring Serralunga d’Alba. Back then, however, a man-made boundary determined whether a vineyard would achieve fame or remain anonymous. The name of his winery—“Drink Wines not Labels”—was chosen in part to emphasize that there are great wines and winemakers even beyond the well-known boundaries. Alessandro’s wines stand out distinctly from tradition, and you can sense that he wants to showcase a fresh, vibrant expression of the region.

His family’s vineyards, located 400 meters above sea level, form the foundation of the winery he founded in 2019, which he runs outside the boundaries of Barolo in his very own style. The heavy, clay- and limestone-rich soils traditionally produce powerful and robust wines, as the vines are put to the test here. Thanks to organic farming practices and his winemaking techniques, Alessandro has nevertheless managed to produce delicate wines, though a touch of that robust character remains. Uncharacteristic of the region, all wines are processed and fermented with whole clusters, which imparts freshness and firmness to the wines; in return, he opts for relatively short maceration. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, and all wines are aged for one winter in neutral containers such as stainless steel or concrete before bottling. Only his top wine, the Nebbiolo Outside, is aged in used Slovenian oak barrels and is allowed to mature for two years before being bottled. This is very similar to the Barolos produced by his neighbors, except that the maceration period is kept slightly shorter at 22 days, and the vineyards, as already described, are just barely “Outside.”Via Vittorio Emanuele 10
