Thomas Straka

Thomas Straka

Thomas Straka is one of the young winemakers who are currently shaping the modern Austrian wine style in southern Burgenland and thereby greatly revitalizing this region, which has been somewhat sleepy in terms of tourism and wine. The Straka Winery is located in Rechnitz in the northern part of southern Burgenland on the southern slopes of the Geschriebenstein. The Rechnitz vines grow at an altitude of up to 500 meters on the highest mountain in Burgenland, which has a decisive influence on the local microclimate: the region is characterized by generally lower temperatures and pronounced temperature fluctuations between day and night. This is expressed in Thomas Straka's mineral-tight wines through lively acidity, structure, and depth.

The focus is on the traditional Burgenland grape varieties Welschriesling and Blaufränkisch, but Thomas Straka's vineyards also grow some Pinot Blanc and Merlot. Fortunately, he owns a large stock of old vines on barren, crystalline slate soils in and around Rechnitz. This gives the Welschrieslings in particular a degree of character, structure, and minerality that is completely lacking in many insignificant varieties on the market and which has impressed us greatly! Combined with an unbeatable price/performance ratio, we highly recommend trying Thomas Straka's wines!
