Raumland

It’s actually hard to believe, but the Raumland family has only been producing sparkling wine in Flörsheim-Dalsheim since 1990. When you taste these fine sparkling wines from Rheinhessen, however, you’d think you were in Champagne rather than any other wine region in Europe. In the winery’s vineyards, Pinot Noir is the most important grape variety, followed by Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, and Riesling. But Pinot Meunier, a variety popular in Champagne, is also grown in Volker Raumland’s vineyards. It adds an extra touch of structure and minerality to the winery’s top sparkling wines. Volker Raumland is Germany’s finest sparkling wine producer and demonstrates the immense potential that lies dormant in the rolling hills of Rheinhessen.

Raumland uses only the “cuvée”—the middle, highest-quality portion of the press—to produce its sparkling wines. A cool, slow fermentation is followed by malolactic fermentation before the wines are bottled for secondary fermentation. Raumland’s sparkling wines remain on the lees for at least two years, though usually significantly longer, to enhance the wine’s complexity and the fineness of its bubbles. Even the simplest of Raumland’s sparkling wines features wonderfully creamy and harmonious bubbles.

The wine magazine *Vinum* also raves about Volker Raumland’s sparkling wines in its September 2014 issue: “German sparkling wine insiders have long speculated that Volker Raumland’s sparkling wines are on par with the best Champagnes. The Vinum Pro Panel, which conducted its tasting on neutral Swiss soil, has now more than confirmed this theory. Like Cédric Bouchard, Volker Raumland proves that the best sparkling wines do not necessarily have to come from chalky soils—the shell limestone in Dalsheim works just as well. Volker Raumland attributes the impressive finesse and smoothness of his sparkling wine primarily to the meticulous aging of his wines on the lees. Equally important, however, is that for 30 years this man has been fine-tuning his sparkling wine, making him a true exception in Germany—and if he isn’t the reincarnation of Dom Pérignon, then he is at least Dom Raumland!”
