Peter Wetzer

Peter Wetzer

Peter Wetzer discovered his passion for wine through the wine trade and learned that Blaufränkisch, known as Kékfrankos, has a long tradition in the Hungarian wine region of Sopron. In the archives of his parents’ home, he found centuries-old records of former vineyards and references to a thriving wine-growing region. Determined to follow in their footsteps, Peter resumed winemaking in 2007 and, with great effort, sought out healthy vineyards planted with Kékfrankos and Furmint and featuring old vines. From the very beginning, he has worked there using organic, artisanal, and traditional methods: naturally, the grapes are harvested exclusively by hand, fermented spontaneously in open vats with minimal extraction, and pressed in his family’s old cellar using an original basket press. Both his Kékfrankos and his Pinot Noir are aged in used Hungarian oak barrels before being bottled without fining or filtration.

For Peter Wetzer, winemaking is also about doing justice to the significance of his region, which is why his winemaking methods are so closely modeled after the traditional techniques of his ancestors. His wines are meant to have personality and identity, with a character that reveals their origin; at the same time, they are delicate and refined, with lively acidity and subtle tannins. They are highly drinkable, with fine minerality and fruit full of character; Peter Wetzer’s style is distinctive, and that is precisely why it fits perfectly into our selection. Although Peter Wetzer is a part-time winemaker, he has grown from an initial production of just a few thousand bottles to over 3 hectares and 20,000 bottles. In addition to his home region of Sopron, he also cultivates vineyards on the Leithaberg in neighboring Burgenland.
