Winery Wechsler

For several years now, Katharina Wechsler has been causing a sensation among established winemakers in Rheinhessen with her straightforward wines. Katharina had actually turned her back on her parents’ winery and was working in Berlin after completing her studies in sociology and political science. It wasn’t until 2009 that she decided to return to Westhofen to transition her parents’ winery—which had previously operated solely as a grape supplier—to direct marketing. Her wines are authentic and full of character, perfectly embodying the modern German wine style and shining with chalky minerality and great complexity. At the same time, her wines are easy to drink and offer exceptional value for the price!

Katharina Wechsler’s vineyards are located around Westhofen, including the famous Kirchspiel site. The best vineyard, however, is the nearly seven-hectare Benn monopole, situated between Brunnenhäuschen and Kirchspiel. All of Katharina Wechsler’s wines are shaped by the region’s limestone-rich soil, starting with her Fräulein Hu sparkling wine, which kicks off this wonderful selection. The fragrant, light-bodied Scheurebe is a fresh summer wine and, like the Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris, is ideal as a dining companion. The wines are refined and elegant, yet still full-bodied, and—as in the Westhofen Riesling—feature intense limestone minerality. The crowning jewels of the lineup and the pinnacle of structure and minerality are the three single-vineyard Rieslings: Benn, Kirchspiel and Morstein.
