Domaine Calvez-Bobinet

Domaine Calvez-Bobinet

Sébastien Bobinet comes from a family of winemakers that has been producing wine in Saumur for eight generations. It wasn’t until relatively late in life—in his early thirties—that he decided to take over the family estate, after his grandparents had already retired 15 years earlier. Slowly but surely, he developed his vision of sustainable viticulture and natural winemaking and prevailed against his family’s resistance. Since 2011, Sébastien’s partner, Emeline Calvez, has also been a pillar of the winery. Emeline was a professional dancer before an accident forced her to pursue a new path. She trained as a sommelier and worked as a wine merchant in Paris before meeting and falling in love with Sébastien on a wine tour across France, at which point she decided to join him on his journey.

It was also she who gave Sébastien the necessary impetus not to rely exclusively on the 1.8 hectares near her home in Beaulieu, on the outskirts of Saumur, but to let the domaine grow a little. And so the two expanded their existing vineyards—where Cabernet Franc and Chenin Blanc have taken deep root in the soft tuff soil—by a few hectares between Dampierre and Souzay. Here, alongside Cabernet Franc, they also grow Pineau d’Aunis, Gamay, and Grolleau noir, from which the two produce a wide variety of wines in their cellar. Many red cuvées, single-varietal Chenin, orange wine, and Pet Nat—the two enjoy trying out something new time and again, yet they always remain true to their structured, fruit-forward, and spicy style with supple tannins and plenty of minerality.
