Grassl

At the Grassl Winery in Göttlesbrunn in Carnuntum, family cooperation is a top priority, with the young winemaking couple Angelika and Philipp working hand in hand with their parents Susanne and Hans. The focus is on red varieties, with Zweigelt and St. Laurent traditionally being the winery's strengths. These are produced in various weight classes, from the light Classic line to the Zweigelt Rubin Carnuntum and the powerful, full-bodied St. Laurent Reserve and Zweigelt Schüttenberg. Philipp Grassl has also made a name for himself with smooth, easy-drinking white wines and the powerful cuvées Neuberg and Bärreiser, which is one of the reasons why wine magazine Falstaff named Philipp Grassl Winemaker of the Year 2018.

The white wine varieties include Grüner Veltliner, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay, with the latter two being harvested in two stages. This ensures an optimal balance between freshness and ripeness. The red wine varieties: Zweigelt, St. Laurent, and Blaufränkisch, as well as a small proportion of Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot, together cover 80% of the vineyard area at the Grassl Winery. The red wines below the reserve category are fermented in stainless steel tanks and above that in wooden fermentation tanks. The subsequent aging takes place in predominantly used barrels for the entry-level wines and predominantly new barrels for the top wines. Medium toasting is used, which gives all wines a strong roasted aroma in their youth. However, what they all have in common is a good balance, elegance, and silky tannins. In exceptional vintages, a Bärreiser Reserve is selected from the best sites and the smallest grapes, most recently in 2012, which is regularly ranked among Austria's top reds.
