Neumeister

The Neumeister Winery in Straden is a family business where the handover has gone perfectly. Brothers Christoph and Matthias have taken over the winery from their father Albert and are successfully running it according to their own ideas. The Steirisches Vulkanland region, formerly marketed as Southeast Styria, differs climatically from neighboring South Styria due to a stronger influence of the Pannonian climate, less precipitation, and a higher average temperature. The soils are characterized by calcareous sediments from the Tertiary period. The STK premium sites at the Neumeister Winery include Klausen, Saziani, and the famous Moarfeitl. The range of varieties consists of classic Styrian wines such as Sauvignon Blanc, Morillon, Pinot Gris, Muscat, and Traminer.

Christoph Neumeister attaches great importance to working in harmony with nature, which is why he has completely dispensed with the use of herbicides, pesticides, and chemical fertilizers. He plants vegetation to create biodiversity in the vineyard, composts, and harvests exclusively by hand into small picking crates. In addition, great importance is attached to optimal harvest timing, with acidity and sugar levels needing to be in balance. Minimalism is the order of the day in the cellar. Where possible, fermentation is spontaneous, after which the wines remain on the fine lees for as long as possible and the single-vineyard wines are transferred to large wooden barrels, all to give the wines more character and individuality. The result is a magnificent series of wines year after year, led by the Sauvignon Blanc Alte Reben, certainly one of the best Sauvignons in Austria.
