The Knipser family winery is one of the best-known in Germany and the main reason why Laumersheim and the Northern Palatinate are so well-known today. For several decades, it has been a driving force in Palatinate viticulture and one of the first wineries to popularize the aging of red wine in small wooden barrels in Germany. The Knipser Winery became famous for these oak-aged red wines—on the one hand, magnificent Pinot Noirs, and on the other, cuvées dominated by international grape varieties. We have been closely following the Knipser Winery for several years and have always been very impressed by the high quality of its wines, but it took an exceptional wine to finally convince us to add it to our selection. The wine was a 2003 Spätburgunder Kirschgarten, and it made a strong impression at a Pinot Noir tasting featuring German and French wines.
What’s impressive about the Knipser Winery is the exceptionally high quality and excellent value—even among its entry-level wines. As a starting point, the Johannishof Riesling and the Sauvignon Blanc display wonderful freshness and a crisp structure; the wines have a rather robust charm, but that’s exactly what makes them so enjoyable. The most important vineyard sites at the Knipser Winery are Kirschgarten, Mandelpfad, Steinbuckel, and Burgweg. The individual vineyards actually have very similar soil structures consisting of loess, sand, and limestone; the difference lies in the limestone content, which varies significantly. Knipser’s single-vineyard wines age extremely well and, especially in the case of reds, do not reach their peak until after several years of bottle aging; therefore, we recommend a little patience, which—as mentioned above—will be well rewarded.
