Domaine Villet

Domaine Villet

The Jura is the most exciting region in France for us. That’s because, aside from the big, sometimes overhyped names, there’s so much more to discover: small, rustic wineries with authentic wines that don’t really get nearly enough attention—but which are still available for “normal” . Domaine Villet is exactly that kind of winery; with its charming and unpretentious wines, it offers a great introduction to this region.

Domaine Villet is located right in the heart of Arbois, not far from the idyllic village square, and was founded by the Villet family over 100 years ago. The vineyards are situated around Arbois and have been organically farmed by Gérard Villet since 1988, which was an absolute rarity at the time. The region’s classic varieties (Chardonnay, Savagnin, Trousseau, and Poulsard) are cultivated, with white grape varieties accounting for about two-thirds of the total. Meanwhile, his son Nathanaël has taken over responsibility in the cellar, but remains stylistically true to his father’s unpretentious, charming, and juicy style. To achieve this, the grapes are harvested at a high level of physiological ripeness, as the Villet family aims to produce wines with substance and a certain fullness. Nevertheless, the alcohol levels remain pleasantly low, and the acidity is rather subtle in the background. In the cellar, the wines are aged in large, used wooden barrels, where they remain on the lees until bottling to promote a certain creaminess without losing the fruit.
