Domaine Le Grappin

Domaine Le Grappin

Almost everyone is familiar with Burgundy’s great vineyards; they are in demand and highly sought after all over the world. However, most tasters and wine enthusiasts seem to completely overlook the fact that there are unknown vineyards with enormous potential right in their immediate vicinity. This is because the soil here is in some cases even more barren than in the Grand Crus, and during the increasingly hot summers, these side valleys near the forest offer significant climatic advantages. From the very beginning, Emma and Andrew Nielsen, the founders of Domaine Le Grappin, had the idea of bringing these exceptional parcels to the forefront. The wines from Le Grappin are taut, delicate, and very pure Burgundies, with no noticeable oak, a fine texture, and plenty of drive.

Australian Andrew has been living in Burgundy since 2009 and worked with Simon Bize in Savigny-lès-Beaune, one of the most important birthplaces of Burgundy’s young natural wine movement. In 2011, he had the opportunity to purchase Pinot grapes from an old vineyard in Savigny-lès-Beaune, and that’s how Domaine Le Grappin’s first wine came to be. To this day, the winery operates exclusively as a négociant without owning any vineyards, meaning they purchase grapes from small winegrowers. While this system is very common in Burgundy, what sets Emma and Andrew apart is their close collaboration with the farmers. They sign long-term contracts, help the farmers transition to organic farming, and pay not by weight—as is customary—but by acreage. This ensures the grape growers have a secure income and can perfectly fulfill the Nielsons’ wishes.
