Tim Fröhlich, the visionary head of the Schäfer-Fröhlich winery, is now mentioned in the same breath as Helmut Dönnhoff, the great pioneer of the Nahe region. Although Tim’s somewhat unconventional, at times extremely mineral-driven wines differ stylistically from the Dönnhoffs’ more classic wines, they now rank in the same league in terms of quality—namely, the top tier! Both in Germany and internationally, the wines from the Schäfer-Fröhlich winery have no reason to fear the competition.

The focus of the lineup is, of course, Riesling, which Tim ferments spontaneously starting with the entry-level wines, giving them the typical “sponti” nose—sometimes subtle, sometimes more intense. This also applies, of course, to the Burgundy varieties he cultivates. We’d especially like to highlight Tim’s “Ortsweine”— the magnificent Rieslings “Vulkangestein” and “Schiefergestein.” They come from the respective terroirs of the top vineyard site Felseneck, offer a minerality rarely found in this price segment, and give many a “Großes Gewächs” a run for its money.
This does not, however, apply to the “Große Gewächse” from the top vineyards Felseneck, Stromberg, Halenberg, Frühlingsplätzchen, and Felsenberg—year after year, with impressive depth and extremely intense minerality, they rank among the best Rieslings in the country, even if the aforementioned “sponti stinker” isn’t everyone’s cup of tea and divides the wine world into fans and skeptics.Schulstraße 6
