Cornelius, now the fourth generation to run the winery, has taken over the reins; he completed his training at the Heger Winery in Baden, then spent several years traveling and learning in Australia and New Zealand, and finally followed in his father’s “footsteps.” Today, the business is more successful than ever!
The vines from the Nahe’s premier vineyards—such as Felsenberg, Dellchen, Kahlenberg, and, of course, Hermannshöhle—grow primarily on weathered slate soils and volcanic weathered soils characterized by porphyry. The wines are aged primarily in large German oak barrels to enhance their complexity and harmony through micro-oxidation. The fantastic Riesling lineup ranges from the crisp and fresh Gutsriesling, through the taut and mineral-driven Riesling Kahlenberg, to the concentrated and extremely complex Riesling Hermannshöhle, which never loses its elegance despite its power. The Dönnhoffs also have a knack for Pinot Noir, bottling these wines in a manner that is both true to the variety and authentic. Dönnhoff’s wines—especially the Rieslings—are characterized by exceptional aging potential; with a few years of bottle aging, the top-tier wines in particular gain an entirely new dimension of complexity.
