Gesellmann

Gesellmann

The 5-star Gesellmann Winery is located in Deutschkreutz, south of Lake Neusiedl, in Central Burgenland, also known as Blaufränkischland. It is small enough that every single grape can be inspected, and large enough that not every berry has to be used. This selection is the basis for outstanding wines such as the Cuvée Opus Eximium, which, although already in the mid-premium segment, is the winery's most important wine. Albert Gesellmann is a proponent of extended barrel aging, which means that his wines are allowed to take a little more time to mature in wooden barrels into balanced, structured, and drinkable wines. The winery's top wine, the Cuvée “G,” is only produced in very good vintages, is allowed to mature in barriques for up to 36 months, and is one of the best red wines Austria has to offer.

Together with Hans Igler and Anton Kollwentz, Engelbert Gesellmann Sr. was one of the first in Austria in the mid-1980s to start planting international varieties and experimenting with aging in small oak barrels, known as barriques. Over 25 years ago, he created the cuvées Opus Eximium and Bela Rex, demonstrating the potential of his red wines with an international style. His son Albert continues the tradition, and the cuvées created by his father, his Blaufränkisch Hochberc and the top wine “G”, are still regularly among the best red wines in the country. He is also well versed in Burgundy varieties; in addition to two excellent Chardonnays, he presses the full-bodied Pinot Noir Siglos. After intensive and careful preparation of the vineyards, the winery has been certified organic since the 2015 vintage.
