Karim Vionnet is something of a foundling. Raised as an orphan by a winemaking couple in the Beaujolais region, he came into contact with the big names in natural wine at an early age—especially Pacalet, Lapierre, and Chamonard. As a laborer, first in the vineyard and then in the cellar, he learned the trade from the ground up. His indomitable cheerfulness earned him the affection of his foster parents and, ultimately, when it came time to build his own winery, their unconditional support as well. Nevertheless, Karim’s path was not an easy one. Over the years, through a lot of hard work and experiences that weren’t always positive, the energetic free spirit has become a settled, serious winemaker whose wines get better every year.
