In 2002, sommelier Jean Christophe Garnier began producing his own wines on less than 2.5 hectares of vineyards around Saint-Lambert-du-Lattay, focusing from the very beginning on organic farming and minimal intervention in the cellar. He learned his craft primarily on his own and from winemaker Marc Angeli, who is known far beyond the Loire for his legendary Chenin Blanc “La Lune.”

Chenin Blanc is also Jean-Christophe’s specialty. He grows this versatile white grape variety on about half of his now 8.5 hectares; the remaining 50 percent of his vineyards are planted with the red varieties Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and a small amount of Grolleau, Pineau d’Aunis, and Gamay. Saint-Lambert-du-Lattay is located in the region known as Anjou Noir, where—unlike in Anjou Blanc—the soils consist not of limestone but mainly of slate, gneiss, and granite. Combined with Jean-Christophe’s gentle yet highly distinctive winemaking style, this terroir produces wines with a mineral character and a seemingly endless drinkability.
