Von Winning

The von Winning Winery is one of the great, historic names in German viticulture. Founded in 1849 as a spin-off from the Bassermann-Jordan Winery, it made a name for itself in the early 20th century and was, among other things, a founding member of the predecessor organization to the VDP. However, the name disappeared with the First World War. The winery was thereafter known as Dr. Deinhard and sank into mediocrity until the late Achim Niederberger purchased it in 2007 and revived the original name. When it came to the wines, however, the new owner was less bound by tradition: the wines produced today at the Von Winning Winery are something completely new and extraordinary. Behind this is long-time managing director Stephan Attmann, who spent many years of his winemaking career in Burgundy and has always been a big fan of white wines aged in oak barrels. So he also aged the Rieslings at the Von Winning Winery in new barrique barrels—a daring endeavor that wasn’t met with universal enthusiasm. We, too, initially struggled with the Rieslings from the Von Winning Winery, which seemed overly oaky. However, with each new vintage, we observed how the use of oak became more subtle and the wines more harmonious. After the simply magnificent 2013 vintage, we were finally won over and absolutely had to have these wines. The wines are clearly reminiscent of the great wines of Burgundy, yet they also combine the typical characteristics of Riesling and the Palatinate.

Von Winning’s second major strength lies in its Sauvignon Blancs, which are available in a total of three different styles: ranging from a light, fruity entry-level wine to the Sauvignon Blanc 500, the winery’s flagship Sauvignon Blanc, aged in new 500-liter barrels.
