Virtually unknown in his own country, Rudolf Trossen is celebrated abroad as a legend for his fragrant, concentrated, and well-structured Rieslings. He exports nearly his entire production, and his wines sell out in a flash, which is why we consider ourselves very lucky to have been able to start with a small quantity this year. And he’s delighted that his wines are finally gaining popularity in his own country as well.
His range can be divided into two lines: the more classic wines feature colorful artwork and are more straightforward, fresh, and sulfured. The wines in the Purus line have black-and-white artist-designed labels, are bottled without filtration or sulfur, and offer a wilder, funkier character.

As early as 1978 (!!!), Rudolf and his wife Rita converted their vineyards on the Middle Moselle to organic farming. Even today, this remains a challenge and is met with skepticism by many fellow winemakers on the Moselle. Back then, it was nothing short of groundbreaking, but also extremely grueling, laborious, and marked by setbacks. For several years now, the vineyards have been managed biodynamically, and since 2010, the Purus line has offered wines produced entirely without any intervention.

Rudolf Trossen is the epitome of calm and nothing can throw him off balance anymore - he’s simply been through too much. He speaks softly and calmly, recounting vintages and challenges from various decades as if they happened yesterday, and peppers his stories with philosophical-sounding comparisons or a dry joke. You can sense his love for his vineyards, the hard work he and his wife Rita have put into them, and also some of the pain caused by the rejection of his wines. A visit with him has a grounding quality and is at the same time stirring, because winemaking is approached differently here - slowly, honestly, but also unconventionally, and with a great deal of passion.
