Roland Velich and his Moric (pronounced Moritz) project have been the subject of much discussion in recent years, and with good reason: it is a redefinition of Blaufränkisch and another successful attempt to place this typical Austrian grape variety on a par with the world's great red wines. Inspired by Burgundy and the northern Rhône Valley, Roland Velich's declared goal is “to make a fine, elegant Blaufränkisch that captivates not with superficial opulence, but with its lasting character shaped by the goût de terroir.” And he has succeeded, because instead of the exuberant fruitiness that is widespread in Central Burgenland, his wines show great finesse and elegance.

Roland Velich found suitable plots in Central Burgenland around Lutzmannsburg and Neckenmarkt, some of which contained very old vines and small-berried clones. From these, he developed a very clear concept with three levels: Blaufränkisch Burgenland at the entry level, Moric Reserve in the middle, and Alte Reben from Lutzmannsburg and Neckenmarkt at the top. It didn't take long for him to gain international recognition, including from Parker's Wine Advocate, before the domestic press abandoned its cautious to critical distance. The enterprising winemaker is now also working on a similar project with Grüner Veltliner from Müllendorf and St. Georgen. Here, too, the aim is to achieve Burgundian quality through low yields, spontaneous fermentation, wood aging, and no fining or filtration.
