The Georg Breuer Winery in Rüdesheim is one of Germany’s most famous wineries and should be a household name to anyone interested in Riesling. Breuer is known for austere, structured Rieslings with a firm framework, crisp acidity, low alcohol, and an engaging minerality. This classic Breuer style has made the Schlossberg, Rottland, Roseneck, and Nonnenberg vineyards renowned for their great, dry Rieslings from the Rheingau. While these wines can seem demanding and harsh in their youth, after a few years of bottle aging, it’s hard to find a better Riesling in your glass.

Theresa Breuer is still very young and has now been running the winery—which she took over following the sudden passing of her father, Bernhard Breuer—for 20 years. She has remained true to her father’s fundamental style—the wines are still robust, straightforward, and shaped by the terroir—but she has made many small adjustments, such as adopting organic farming practices, and has perhaps refined the wines just a touch further. On 38 hectares, Riesling is primarily grown on steep slopes; the aforementioned top vineyards account for nearly half of the vineyard area and are characterized by varying degrees of loam, with layers of quartzite and slate. The hidden gem of the lineup is the robust Terra Montosa Riesling; the grapes for this wine come exclusively from the four top vineyards, and the wine displays similar qualities to its “big brothers,” including aging potential—all at a delightful price.
