Egon Müller Scharzhof

Egon Müller Scharzhof

The Egon Müller-Scharzhof winery in Wiltingen is the most famous winery on the Saar and is run by Egon Müller IV. The Müller family has owned vineyards in the municipality of Wiltingen since 1797, and for four generations they have been in the hands of an Egon Müller. Immediately after 1945, Egon Müller III initiated the winery's pioneering quality policy and purchased vacant vineyard sites, such as the single vineyards “Wiltinger Kupp” and “Wiltinger braune Kupp.” The winery is named after the Scharzhofberg vineyard, a 27-hectare south-facing slope about two kilometers outside Wiltingen with blue Devonian slate. The wines are reserved for connoisseurs in Germany, but their international reputation is all the greater for it. Müller's Beerenauslese, Trockenbeerenauslese, and ice wines often fetch astronomical prices at auction.

The vineyards on the Saar are characterized by a very cool climate, which is why the vintage and late harvest are of utmost importance. However, when it comes to winemaking, the Müllers' philosophy is based on the belief that the best wines “make themselves.” Following the credo “quality is 100% created in the vineyard,” they practice natural cultivation without fertilizers and herbicides, intensive manual labor, and the old, partly ungrafted vines with extremely low yields on the unique terroir. herbicides, intensive manual labor, and old, partly ungrafted vines with extremely low yields on the unique terroir of the Scharzhofberg do the rest. Egon Müller's Rieslings are characterized by a spicy and salty minerality that gives great depth and length to the balanced interplay between present acidity and aromatic sweetness. The Mosel and Saar regions are synonymous with the world's finest noble Rieslings, and the Egon Müller winery is the undisputed leader: in 2015, the 2003 Scharzhofberger Riesling TBA was auctioned for an incredible €12,000 per bottle (0.75 liters).
