Rings

Rings

Over the past ten years, brothers Steffen and Andreas Rings have achieved the unimaginable: in record time, they transformed their father’s little-known barrel-making business into one of the VDP’s flagship wineries. In the process, a wine style all their own has emerged, one that could be described as “modern Baroque”: slightly less fruit, always a certain coolness, mineral smokiness, low alcohol (with the exception of the cuvées), plenty of finesse, and perfectly integrated oak. The two easygoing “Pälzer Buwe” convey passion and enjoyment for their work and have remained down-to-earth despite their success. Their uncompromising commitment to quality is particularly evident in their Spätburgunder wines, which have ranked among Germany’s best since the 2015 vintage.

The Rings family’s vineyards are located in the small village of Freinsheim in the northern Palatinate, near Bad Dürkheim. Riesling and Pinot Noir, the estate’s most important varieties, are primarily grown on poor, limestone-rich soils near Kallstadt, while other varieties—and especially the grapes used for the cuvées from the Schwarzes Kreuz vineyard—are grown on heavy, clay-rich soils. The vineyards are cultivated using natural methods and entirely by hand.

In the wine cellar, fermentation occurs spontaneously with as little intervention as possible. Wood is used for many of the wines; for white wines, this is usually in old, large wooden barrels, while for Burgundies and red wines, new and used barriques are also used. What all these wines have in common is the perfect integration of the wood; you won’t find any chocolatey or toasty notes here. The Rings-Brüder selection impresses with fresh and mineral Rieslings, powerful and smooth cuvées, and Burgundian-style, delicately structured Spätburgunders.
