Ernst Triebaumer, or ET for short, is one of the fathers of the Austrian red wine miracle. With his legendary 1986 Blaufränkisch Mariental, he drew international attention to top Austrian red wines for the first time and has been a cult figure ever since. Because good wine is made in the vineyard, the Triebaumer winery pays particular attention to healthy soils, good foliage management, and extreme selection during the manual harvest. The Triebaumers describe themselves as winegrowers, deliberately emphasizing that they are down-to-earth winemakers with a close connection to nature. It is therefore no surprise that the winery also has a flock of sheep, several bee colonies, and an orchard. They are proud of their wide range of wines, because whether red, white, or sweet wine—the family is equally skilled in all wine categories.

The focus is naturally on Blaufränkisch. In addition to the great Mariental, the Triebaumers also offer excellent quality at low prices in the entry-level segment. None of these wines are loud; rather, they are calm and complex, with an intense, mellow tannin structure, juicy acidity, and exceptional aging potential. The Triebaumers' wines need time to develop, which they are given at the winery, and after a few years in the cellar, they present themselves as harmonious, complex, and profound.
Even though the Triebaumer winery has strangely flown somewhat under the radar in recent years, the Blaufränkisch Mariental remains the benchmark for us when it comes to Austrian red wine. In good years, this wine can easily be cellared for over 20 years and develops stylistically in the direction of the great Bordeaux wines of the left bank. We had such an experience at Christmas 2014 with the 1990 Blaufränkisch Mariental – a great Austrian wine that we thoroughly enjoyed!
